Over 100 years in construction

In the construction industry, companies come and go with the ebb and flow of the business cycle. In such a volatile industry, longevity is a rare and honored commodity. Bruns-Gutzwiller Incorporated has exhibited this quality since 1920. William A. Gutzwiller returned from World War I to his hometown of Batesville.

In this small town in southeastern Indiana, he had started a small residential construction company before the war. After returning from the battlefields, he was determined to expand the business into something more. In those early years he received several strategic bids and continued to survive the Great Depression and World War II. In addition to construction, William held various community positions of leadership and was eventually a representative to the Indiana House.

Our company was formed as a result of the merger between Bruns Brothers Masonry and the W.A. Gutzwiller Company in 1970.

Bill Senior’s son, William R Gutzwiller, joined the company in the early 60′s after attending Purdue University and spending the summers learning the family trade.

The company continued its progress under the leadership of Bill, and serveral other shareholders. While W.A. Gutzwiller’s company was establishing itself as one of the foremost construction companies in southeastern Indiana, four brothers from the small town of Millhousen were learning a trade that would eventually lead them to Batesville. Alfred Bruns was a prominent veterinarian in Mill housen, a small farming town in Decatur County. During the depression, he urged his two older sons, Craig and Dave, to learn a trade so they apprenticed as brick layers with a regional masonry company. In addition, brothers Don and Robert joined them and Bruns Brothers Masonry was formed. Over time their reputation grew to become one of the best in southern Indiana.

It was at that time that they did a great deal of subcontracting for Gutzwiller’s. They joined forces in 1970 and the company expanded quickly with the start of their first large construction job, the Indiana National Guard Armory in Shelbyville. This project helped the company learn about all aspects of the construction process, and also provided longstanding work, spurring the company on to a good start and newer heights.

Bruns-Gutzwiller has contracted work all over the state working on Federal Government buildings, Fortune 500 companies, as well as many board of education projects in the region. They now reside in their current headquarters in Batesville, where their staff and operations are maintained.
